Our Mission Statement
The Manitoulin Island Index has many goals. First and foremost, we wish to unify the Island on the internet so anyone, anywhere can identify and contact a business, a potential customer or product. Second, we wish to make it easier for each and every individual with internet access to contact his or her government representative, be it local, provincial, or federal. You should be able to easily contact your area's mayor, a reeve, the township clerk, or members of parliament to question a tax bill, results of a township meeting, the schedule for the next Lion's Club breakfast, or where the garage sales are being held on the coming weekend.
You and I know some or all of the above, but all this information should be readily available in one central location.
The Index wishes to do this and a lot more for you.
Our intent is not to make the local newsletters and newspapers obsolete. We wish to expand on them and empower our citizenry to easily access knowledge, allow every business to broaden their client base and selling ability, and to put Manitoulin on the information highway.
The father-son approach has worked on Manitoulin for many decades, but with the advent of the internet, personal computers, pda's and cell phones, businesses and individuals must step forward to the new technology or be left behind. Giving a farmer the power to conduct business from his tractor while plowing his fields is something that cannot be left untouched. Allowing a potential buyer to miss out on your year-end sale because you do not believe in computers just doesn't cut it. Making it possible for a taxpayer to call up a website and get the information he needs is just common sense. Helping a tourist locate a historic site leads to a happy tourist, a returning tourist, and a tourist who will recount his travels to his friends and family.

Getting Around Manitoulin
Every web page out there tells you that our island is referred to as "The Jewel of the Great Lakes" and we won't deny it, but for first-time visitors a map would probably help.
Clicking on the map will load a larger picture and you'll see the various townships. To the right, you can go to their respective web pages.
The Manitoulin Chamber of Commerce has an even more detailed map - it is a pdf file and you'll be able to see the roads so you can navigate our island.
