Canada Hires Unsuitable Border Guards
Well, not exactly.
Highschool and university students that reside in the Niagara Region have long been working at the border that seperates Canada and the United States. This is no big shock to anyone. It's a great summer job and one, I'm sure, that some of these kids hang onto after school graduation.
Reading the CBC story titled
'Armed border guards coming despite testing delays: Ottawa' states that 175 border staff have offered to take on the job of training their co-workers to handle guns as they will soon be issued sidearms. The story goes on to say that these 175 candidates have to go through psychological testing and written exams to 'whittle down' the unsuitable ones.
If I was one of these individuals or their union rep, I'd be screaming bloody blue murder that my employer thought I was qualified to confront armed civilians trying to enter Canada only if I was unarmed.
I'd be asking whether CBC got the quote wrong or some idiot in Ottawa actually said it.
Despite a month-long delay in a psychological screening program, Ottawa maintains it will have some armed border officers on duty before the end of the summer.
The screening is intended to weed out unsuitable candidates for jobs as weapons trainers.
Many Canadian border officers say they need guns to protect themselves from people who may be armed when they enter Canada. (CBC) Some 175 officers have applied to teach their colleagues how to handle guns, a Canadian Border Services Agency spokesman told CBC Online on Monday.
I suppose those young people that take summer jobs at the border will be out of luck once this 'packing a gun thingie' kicks in.
The screening is intended to weed out unsuitable candidates for jobs as weapons trainers.
