Not To Worry Albertans
Lake Wabamun won't suffer any long-term damage from a train derailment that dumped 1.3 million litres of heavy bunker fuel oil and wood preservative nearby, according to a new report commissioned by CN Rail.
The spill happened on Aug. 3, 2005, when a CN freight train left the tracks in the village of Wabamun, Alberta.
The report by environmental assessment firm Golder Associates found no problems for algae, plankton, shoreline reeds, and most invertebrates in Lake Wabamun.
But researchers did discover some deformities in whitefish eggs incubating in sediments containing oil residue.
Seems strange that CN would be the one to commission such a report, but these folks are truly concerned with the environment so let's give them a chance, eh.
I wonder if Albertans have been cautionned about smoking while enjoying the beach or while they troll for 'the big one'?
