It's Okay To Cry

Listening to the rhetoric of the current election candidates, I've heard a few mentions of getting tough on crime. Nothing new there. It's only come back up for discussion because of the recent events in downtown Toronto where a young teenager shopping was gunned down in broad daylight. This young girl was an innocent bystander and her death was brought about, no doubt, because of competing drug dealers out to kill one another or a revenge hit brought about by God only knows what.

Living in Toronto for many years now has been dangerous to say the least. The problem - the police can't say it, but the problem is with the black youth of Toronto. Specifically the black youth of Jamaican descent who have come here from the islands or who are even born here of parents from the islands.

"But you can't say that!", they cry out. Hell, sure I can and I will continue saying it.

The Problem Rests In The Young Jamaican Community.

And while talking about law enforcement:

Having served in law enforcement before my retirement I hear from old co-workers and friends from time to time and get info on what's going on in their lifes. I received a powerpoint presentation that I wish to share with you.

The subject of this presentation was raised in parliament in the Northwest Territories by the honourable Charles Dent on March 4, 2005 when he said:

It is with great sadness that I speak to an event that reminds us of the dangers facing those who put their lives on the line to make our communities safer. Yesterday, four RCMP officers were shot and killed while investigating a suspected marijuana grow operation near Rochfort Bridge, Alberta.

This serious and tragic event has touched all of us, especially the officers' colleagues here in the Northwest Territories who are represented in the House this morning by Inspector Greg Morrow and Inspector Roch Fortin of "G" Division. It also reminds us of the thanks we owe to those RCMP officers in our northern communities, and across Canada who risk their lives to protect the public.

On behalf of the Government, Members of the Assembly and the people of the Northwest Territories, I offer heartfelt sympathies to the friends and families of the officers who lost their lives yesterday.

I would ask that Members rise and observe a moment of silence to remember the fallen officers.

CBC News covered the story by saying: ROCHFORT BRIDGE, ALTA. - A raid on a suspected marijuana grow operation in rural Alberta has left five people dead - four of them RCMP officers. It is the single worst multiple killing of RCMP officers in modern Canadian history.
The powerpoint presentation is over 2 megs large and a strain for dialup users, so I'll just show a few slides.

Yes, it is time we did something about the laws dealing with cop-killers!
