Cleaning Up Your Harddrive

When you first set up that computer of yours the harddrive was nice and clean, but not any longer. Every time you did something whether it be install a new app or update your spyware definitions, you created new files on your drive.
After a time your harddrive becomes a real mess and if you don't do something about it, you soon fill up your machine to the point you can't install anything new.
That's a bit of a stretch as today's machines are put together with massive harddrives, but you get where I'm going with this. File maintenance is important if you want to keep a lean, mean machine.

So, what's the solution ?

Here are a couple of cleaners that come highly recommended. They allow you to choose what type of files you wish to clean up.

There is another cleaner out there that does wonders cleaning, but I have to warn you this one can be very dangerous and should only be used by advanced users. When started up it just runs and gives you no control over what it is cleaning - you could be left with a machine that will not boot.
I strongly suggest you steer clear of DustBuster.
DustBuster is a garbage file removing utility for Microsoft Windows operating systems. It searches for junk files and temp files that are of no use and are just taking space on your hard drive. Based on a "fuzzy logic" scanning technology, DustBuster cleans over 1500 different types of useless temp files and directories in a single click, detecting and deleting all these unneeded files automatically. This will increase hard disk space on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. The integrated SensibleScan search engine does not interfere with system files or installed applications: it gives you the freedom to clean up disk space simply and securely in no time, enhancing your system's performance, so you can focus on what's really important to you.
DustBuster analyzes in full automatic mode the content of your hard drive and finds and deletes a wide range of files while safeguarding the integrity of the operating system and the installed applications. No configuration is required as DustBuster is developed for reducing the interaction with the user.
DustBuster should not be installed on critical systems: authors accept no responsibility for damages caused as results of use of this software. The SensibleScan technology is under development and must be considered experimental. We strongly recommend to perform a complete backup of the hard drive if you are trying automatic cleaning for the first time.

In a newsgroup that I read, a poster had this to say:
"Holy something ! - I use both ccleaner and diskcleaner at system startup, but this thingy removed another 300+ Mb that the other two programs 'missed'. "
Again - the inexperienced should leave this one alone! Personally, I use DiskCleaner and it does exactly what I want it to do.
So why have I included this one, you ask? I would be inclined to use this app only on a machine I was cleaning up for a special purpose, say a test machine where I wanted a clean harddrive to check out certain applications. I have an old 486 running Windows98 where I can use it.
I'd never try it on my production computer!

But That's Not All You Can Do !

There is another all-around cleaner that you may not be aware of. This one too, is highly recommended.

I have to warn you of one very important thing before you use this app.
Any time you attempt to clean your registry, you leave yourself wide open to a machine that will not work - the registry is only to be tampered with by experienced computer users! And when done, backing up your registry first is paramount.
Before you download and use EasyCleaner, I highly recommend you read the following review at Buzzy's Stall Wall written by Eric Eaton. Eric has a download link you can use.
Another thing! Only download EasyCleaner from that link - another individual has a web page with the toniarts domain and he is pushing a different cleaner trying to use the original author's reputation.
