End Of Year CleanUp
Your computer fills up with a great deal of garbage from day to day use and it is good policy to keep up a cleaning schedule. Like most of us, you probably have been remiss in this.
For this reason I'm laying out a series of "end of year scans". There is no rhyme or reason to the order listed here - I'm just plugging them in as I find them off my favourites.

  • HouseCall -  an online scan from Trend Micro. Always a good idea to supplement your own anti virus app with another as something might have been missed.

  • ActiveScan -  an online scan from Panda Software. Always a good idea to supplement your own anti virus app with another as something might have been missed. Hunts down spyware and trojans as well.

  • F-Secure -  an online scan from F-Secure. Always a good idea to supplement your own anti virus app with another as something might have been missed.

  • BitDefender -  an online scan from BitDefender. Always a good idea to supplement your own anti virus app with another as something might have been missed.

  • SpywareNuker -  After you've run Spybot and Adaware, run this online scan to check for spyware that might have been missed.

  • SpyAudit -  After you've run Spybot and Adaware, run this online scan from Webroot to check for spyware that might have been missed.

  • A-Squared -  Emsi Software sells and has a free application to prevent trojans, worms, dialers, and spyware. Use this free online scan. It includes a port scan, a security test, an exploit test, and a browser configuration check.

  • TrojanScan -  A free online scan from Windows Security Dot Com. Works only with IE browser. The front end for this scan is from Emsi Software, noted above.

  • E-Mail Security Check -  A free online scan from Windows Security Dot Com. Test to see if your e-mail client is secure.

  • AuditMyPC Dot Com -  This online scan checks your firewall, checks for spyware, checks your internet speed, and checks to see if your browser patch management is up to date.

  • BroadBand Reports Dot Com -  A number of scans available here including a speed test, a port scan, and tcp connection tweaking.

  • Secure Design Port Scan -  Plug up security holes with this port scan.

  • PCFlank -  A series of tests to beef up your computer security.

  • Sygate -  A series of tests to beef up your computer security. Sygate is heavy into firewalls and was recently bought out by Symantec.

  • Symantec -  An online security check from one of the leaders in computer security technology.

  • Gibson Research -  Steve Gibson is the man who brought spyware to the attention of computer users. His work has been invaluable in the war against malware. Run his online scan.

  • PCPitstop -  Set up a free account and run this exhaustive scan on your computer. Highly recommended!

  • Windows Live Service Scan -  New from Microsoft, an app that removes viruses, warns you of threats, tweaks your computer's performance, and eliminates junk files.

  • Windows OneCare Live -  A new beta from Microsoft which has finally gotten involved in the fight against malware. Not an online scan, you install this and it sits in your systems tray and alerts you to security issues.

While you are in a housekeeping mood, I highly recommend the following article from Sysopt.com - PC Housekeeping: Optimize With Maintenance , written in 2003 but still applicable today.
