My Computer Desk
When I got started putzing around with personal computers I had a good source of guidance from a great group of people I worked with. I still can't believe the number of folks working in one small office ( actually a small jail in Southwestern Ontario ) that were computerized at home. As a newbie, they were at my beckon call for all the usual problems a newbie runs into when tackling the daily use of a pc.
Having said that, I decided long ago that I would be happy to help out anyone I bumped into in life that was struggling with their new computer. Enter Anne and Murray.
I met these two fine people at my sister-in-laws one evening months ago and in the course of the evening the subject of my computer use came up. Anne seemed interested in using a computer at the time and about a month later I bumped into them when shopping in Gore Bay and they asked about what kind of computer they needed and where to buy it.
Naturally, I gave them a brief description of what I perceived they needed and where to start. About two weeks later, the phone started ringing.
Long story short - after several runs over to Anne and Murray's house, I've got them started on computers. In spite of a few shortcomings like a printer that had to be shipped back to the manufacturer twice, Anne is now happily surfing the internet and e-mailing all her galfriends.
Naturally I've refused any monetary payment for my time, but I've found out that Anne bakes a hell of a great cake. And Murray, a self-confessed carpenter, offered to help me put my computer desk back together more like it was designed to be.
We had bought the computer desk years ago. It is one of those ones you have to assemble from thirteen million parts. When I first put it all together when living down south I had the instructions and it seemed to go together quite well. Naturally when I went to put it together here on Manitoulin, I couldn't find the instructions, so my desk sort of took an odd shape when I had attached the last screw.
Murray came over and took a few measurements and grabbed all the spare parts of the desk that were left over from my previous assembly attempt. A few days later Murray was standing at the front door with a beautiful filing cabinet that slips under the face of my computer desk.
My desk is now complete and I'm a happy man except I never got the recipe for that cake Anne gave me. When I get it, I'll post it here for all to see.

Happy surfing Anne & Murray!
