Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope
Every September they have a Terry Fox run. And lately Canadian television viewers have been hammered with advertising of an upcoming remake of The Terry Fox Story. In the movie, Robert Duvall plays the part of a Canadian Cancer Society PR guy who gets behind Terry and the rest is history.
Countless millions of dollars world-wide has been raised as a result of the Marathon of Hope and all the subsequent runs and functions.
Talking about this over dinner the other night, I heard an interesting opinion. When you go to a funeral parlour you are often asked to donate to Cancer Research in lieu of flowers. People write checks for various amounts of money. Multiply that by 356 days of the year by every funeral parlour in the world and that comes to a substantial amount of money. Add to that the countless other fund raisers held world-wide and we are talking about billions of dollars. Given that Terry Fox died June 28, 1981, the question was asked, "Why hasn't the cure been found?" and "What have we got for all our money spent?"
I don't hold the same opinion of the person that brought this up, but he raises a serious question. Have we created a cash cow for the Cancer Society? Are we to believe that a cure will ever be found when so many people are making a decent living out of this 'cash cow'?
I'm thinking that an audit of money raised and money spent should be published so people will not share the opinion of my dinner companion. And I'm not talking local money - I'd be interested to see the world-wide figures. A copy of this post is being sent to the Toronto office of The Canadian Cancer Society to see if they care to respond to my dinner companion.
