Play Ball
Here we are, July 1st already, and the boys of summer are hard at it trying for a pennant and a World Series ring.If the weather at all the ballparks across North America is anything like the weather we're getting here on Manitoulin Island, I should hope those guys are drinking lots of fluids and wearing their sunscreen. Pictured to the left is Babe Ruth, a man that most of us 'seniors' associate with the real meaning of baseball. If anyone could hit it out of the ballpark, it was Babe. Over the years, Major League Baseball has provided us with a lot of heroes that we wish we could be like. Who can forget Mantle, DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Shoeless Joe, Stan the Man Musial, Sandy Koufax, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and a host of others? Up here in Canada, Toronto Blue Jays had a pitcher by the name of Dave Steib - a guy that not only could pitch during a snowstorm, but could hold his own at the plate with all the other batters. Dave belongs here. Every team had its characters. Many of the teams had ballparks that eeked with history. I couldn't help but be humble when I visited Yankee Stadium and the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. As a youngster, I went to Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto with my Dad - I had no idea back then that the likes of Babe Ruth once stood at home plate. Incidentally, Ruth hit his first professional home run in Toronto's Hanlan's Point Stadium, the ballpark on Toronto's island used before Maple Leaf Stadium was built in 1926. One ballpark that was a favourite to New Yorkers was Dodger Stadium - here is a story of a visiting Chicago Cubs outfielder by the name of Rick Monday. When Rick was tying up his cleats before the start of the game on April 25, 1976, he had no idea what would go on in his outfield. If you enjoy baseball humour, click on Who's On First. |
