Border CrossingsIf you are coming from the States into Canada at a major border crossing you will see lots of personnel and know that law enforcement can be dispatched there in mere minutes. If you are a border officer in one of many small, out of the way border crossings that seperates our two countries, you are probably all alone and if the shit hits the fan you will probably end up in a body bag.The union representing these border guards wants their people armed and the government disagrees. RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli said in April that giving sidearms to border guards would be a 'dangerous move' and contribute little to improving national security. Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan has also defended Canada's approach to border security saying," I don't think it makes a lot of sense, in terms of the expenditure of resources, to have every inch of that undefended border patrolled by Canadian, RCMP, or whoever it might be, 24/7," she told reporters in support of Comm. Zaccardelli's remarks. "I don't believe that is a rational use of our resources." Maybe these two bureaucrats should don the uniform for a couple of shifts at one of these border crossings to see who fills their pants first. Yup, every RCMP Commissioner should experience 'shitting oneself' when faced with a life and death experience without the necessary tools to defend oneself, not to mention defend one's nation. As to the Public Safety Minister, I get the impression she pays people to change her soiled panties whenever that happens. But the hallways of the Nation's Capital are not full of lunatics, drunk drivers, escaping criminals, and terrorists on a mission so Anne McLellan would not understand that. To my ex-peers guarding our border, you have only to look at how long it took to get Ministry of Natural Resources personnel armed. Those bozos in Ottawa have never stumbled into a camp with a bunch of drunken poachers sitting around a bonfire skinning a deer. Okay, so maybe I was wrong about no lunatics in the hallways of the Nation's Capital... |
