POKO's War Movie Review

I've got a whole slew of war movies sitting here I've watched over and over so I thought I'd pick one every now and then and tell you what I think of them. You may or may not agree with what I say.

Run Silent, Run Deep
Leonard Maltin describes this as 'one of our great WW2 sub pictures'. I have to agree as the cast in the movie is superb. Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable, the sub's officers, have conflicting ideas about their orders (going into the toughest sector of the Pacific war that became a graveyard of American subs). Gable is injured after entering the sector and Lancaster takes command of the sub. He reenters the sector against his better judgement when he discovers the reason why the Japanese have been so successful sinking American subs.

The movie also stars Jack Warden whose performances in anything I've seen have been true to life. Don Rickles plays the role of a sailor who always has something to say. His role is believable and entertaining.

The movie includes lots of excitement with crash dives, strafing by enemy planes, depth charges, and underwater shots. The movie is post war coming out in 1958 based on a Navy Commander's novel.

As I was finishing up highschool back in the sixties, I tried to enlist in the Canadian Navy. They didn't want me as I was partially colourblind. It seems our ships are white and the enemies are light green and that left me out in the cold. A shame, as back then I was a member of my school's swim team, a strong swimmer who loved the water having grown up on the shore of Lake Ontario.

This movie might have been a factor in my desires to be in the navy, I dunno.
