Ilario Pantano, the Marine who may be charged with the death penalty for killing two Iraqi insurgents in the heat of battle in a terrorist-infested town near Baghdad. Today was the first day of a preliminary hearing known as an Article 32 investigation to determine whether there is enough evidence for a court-martial. Lt. Pantano could face death for actions he says he took in self-defense. There's fresh coverage of the hearing in the New York Times, Washington Post, and from NPR. Lt. Pantano's family runs a website about the case at Defend the Defenders. Dateline NBC aired a report about Lt. Pantano last month.
