Gagliano says Martin is going to Destroy Liberals Josh Pringle Monday, April 25, 2005 Former public works minister Alfonso Gagliano says Prime Minister Paul Martin is going to "destroy" the Liberal Party and "break up the country." During an interview on Monday, Gagliano said Martin has taken Canada and the federal Liberal party down the road to ruin. Gagliano says Quebec sovereignty is inevitable after the revelations at Justice John Gomery's inquiry. Gagliano once headed the sponsorship program.

Some Background

Alfonso Gagliano is a friend of ex-Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Alfonso Gagliano was the primary cabinet minister responsible for the scandal-ridden sponsorship program, although he has denied any wrongdoing.
After a series of accusations about patronage, Gagliano was dropped from cabinet in January 2002, and appointed Ambassador to Denmark.
When the second Auditor General report on the sponsorship program was released in February 2004, Alfonso Gagliano was recalled from Denmark and fired by Prime Minister Paul Martin.
Gagliano filed a $4.5 million lawsuit seeking compensation for wrongful dismissal.
