Windows XP SP2

I know of two people that need to load Service Pack 2 to their Windows XP operating system. My brother is one and due to distance between us, I am blogging the correct procedure so he and others can go about this safely.
There have been countless people who have had bad experiences with SP2 so Mike and quite a few other people have been putting this off.

  • Backup any files you cannot live without. (just in case)

  • Use your Anti- Virus application to scan your computer.

  • Run your computer through an online scanner

  • Symantec On-line Scanner
  • Run your computer through another online scanner

  • HouseCall On-line Scanner
  • Scan your computer for spyware

  • No one spyware app gets out all the malware so you gotta run all of these. Spyware has been found to be one of the main reasons SP2 does not install cleanly!
    Microsoft Windows Antispyware
Adaware make sure def's are updated
SpyBot make sure def's are updated
Ewido make sure def's are updated
  • Make a system restore point

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Turn off your computer

  • Start up your computer

  • Have someone with computer knowledge sitting next to you in case it goes wrong.
    Disable your anti-virus app
Load your SP2 cd in and follow the on-screen prompts
Once installed run Windows Update right after you reboot
