Canada Embarrasses Me

by POKO on Jan 17th, 2005 7:29 AM

Peter Worthington writes a column for Canoe and this one is about 'Where would we be without the United States'. It is well written and has been quoted on the various blogs.
Peter points out that Canada,s Dart (Disaster Assistance Response Team) was unable to get their equipement to the disaster zone because they had insufficient transport aircraft. No kidding.
Canada has never been able to get their troops anywhere without relying on other nations to get them mobile. When we buy our used submarines from other nations, we don't take them out for sea-worthy tests, we just start up the engines and head home. Our aging helicopters fall out of the sky because they are just that, aged.

I am embarrassed to be Canadian. I'm embarrassed that our military leaders haven't purchased the hardware our troops need, and I'm embarrassed that our political leaders have not ensured that our military has the money to buy that hardware.

Way back in 1964 I tried enlisting in the Canadian Navy. I was rejected because I was partially colour-blind. Good thing because I probably would have ended up at the bottom of the ocean in a broken down used submarine or dead from falling out of the sky in one of our helicopters. I never got the chance to thank those fellas down at HMCS York for saving my life by flunking me out - Thanks guys!
